It was an amazing story. Once I started reading I found it difficult to put the book down. The story is well woven with the different characters showing how their individual personalities change throughout the novel. It gives a great perspective of how the Japanese occupation affected so many people in Singapore.
The reality that shines through this work of fiction surprised me. At the end of the book I was moved and almost sad it wasn't true. But it seems to have given insight into many true stories by bringing life to one amalgamation of all.
"How We Disappeared", Jing-Jing Lee's novel about one of the "comfort women" and her grandson's unraveling the mystery of her life promised great things. Unfortunately it did not live up to the promise of a compelling story that was tightly written and satisfying both emotionally and thematically.Wang Di, a seventeen year old girl, was conscripted by Japanese invaders in her village, located in Singapore. Taken to a black-and-white house, a Japanese brothel, she "serviced" Japanese soldiers. Friendships between the comfort women and their concern for one another enabled her to survive until the end of the war.This novel takes place in three different settings - the village where Wang Di lived before her capture; the brothel; and in her son's home both before and following her death. Further, it takes place during three time periods - Wang Di's life before and after World War II and the present day in which her grandson takes center stage . The novel shifts among these periods and settings randomly, providing glimpses of the impact of her past on her present life and that of her family.Jing-Jing Lee formats "How We Disappeared" in an interesting and somewhat unusual manner. Portions of the novel prior to and after World War II and Wang Di's captivity are narrated in the third person. It is as if the story was of someone else's life and not that of the protagonist. Portions of the novel in which she was held captive as a "comfort woman" are narrated in the first person. It is as if Wang Di must remind herself of her true identity and her individuality. Kevin also narrates the chapters in which he takes the lead in the first person voice. This allows him to tell his grandmother's story in a more personal manner and to draw the reader into his quest to discover her truths.If I were able, I would give "How We Disappeared" 3.5 stars. Portions of the novel are very engrossing, while other parts seem to meander and become vague.
I generally like point-of-view narratives and especially from a different perspective from myself.I found, however, that I didn't like author, Jing-Jing Lee's writing style.We have two main characters Wang Di and Kevin.She starts out with a rush description of her birth to a widow: all within just a few pages.What I found is that Ms. Lee spent too much time dwelling on things such as a description of her home or mundane activities of her day when she could have focused on her development as a woman instead of waiting much later in the book to deal with that.The relationship with her husband "Old One" was also hit-and-miss for me. And, although, she debated on whether to confront him about alleged infidelities that went on for decades, she doesn't.The transition between Wang Di and Kevin was also a bit dry.Kevin's story isn't much more interesting either.***There was a story that I read a few years ago about a single woman who lived in a small village in Poland during the Nazi occupation. And, here to, you're seeing through her eyes and her actions how she overcame the circumstances and saved a family and a soldier's life with the army tanks parked just a few feet away from her door.That story, My Mother's Secret, had me spellbound. I felt like I knew her and her daughter. I knew the people in the neighborhood, even so much as smelling the food she bought everyday from the market. I also felt the terror of Polish citizens being rounded up and never heard and seen again. It was a wonderful and empowering story.***Don't get me wrong, there were a few interesting moments in How We Disappeared, but they were few and far between. I don't know if you could let a story flounder for too long in passages that don't move the story along without losing the reader's interest.
