I have the paperback edition. The Amazon description is quite penetrating and accurate. This collection of nine portraits was written between the years 1924-1938, all in emigration. It is taken from a four-volume edition of Khodasevich's collected works published in Moscow in 1997. There is some indication that there was a Soviet 1971 edition, which is interesting, as I did not know that Russian writers in emigration were being rehabilitated that early.The translation seems smooth and competent. Prof. Bethea is a Khodasevich expert with prose that is reasonably free of American academic prolixity. The figures portrayed are Nina Petrovskaya; Bryusov; Bely; "Muni" (Samuil V. Kissin); Gumilyov and Blok; Gershenzon; Sologub; Esenin; and Gorky. Not all, of course, are now considered to be poets or writers in the first rank. This curious work is more akin to sociology or character analysis than literary criticism, which disappointed me, as Khodasevich enjoys a reputation as both a literary critic and distinguished poet. He did quote Esenin's poetry extensively, which is good. Esenin was, at least at one time, extremely popular with the Russian people. Apparently he "had something"---and Khodasevich seems to agree---and his prosody deserves closer study.Prof. Bethea has written a definitive monograph on Khodasevich and Nina Berberova, in "The Italics are Mine", brilliantly served as a "keeper of the flame" of that era and of Khodasevich's memory.
